Fairy Lights got their name literally from the fairies!
In 1882, The Savoy Theatre in London housed a production of the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta Iolanthe and for the opening night the owner Richard D'Oyly Carte equipped the principal fairies with miniature lighting. The electric star lights that the principal fairies wore on top of their heads aroused much excitement. The term 'fairy lights' subsequently came into common use after this show.
130 years on and fairy lights are an integral part of any big event or celebration and common place in many households, being used in windows, roofs, doors, table decorations and of course on Christmas trees.
